Why does it matter: because in a democracy, there must be some link between what the public thinks and what the government does. It"s the delegates vs. trustee distinction we made earlier: (normative question): there is also a question of whether the public"s capable of governing. Another way to answer this question is to consider who is most interested in. Po (public opinion: elected officials public opinion may influence government decision making, academics seek to understand why people behave the way they do, the people may be motivated to become active in politics. Strong correlation between parents" parties and children"s party: school. Taught respect for authority figures outside the home. Gives a civic education to students: teach them slogans, symbols, government, etc, less likely to rebel against system. College: tends to make people more liberal, the kids that actually go to college more prone to liberal viewpoints, community and peers.
