KIN 1600 Chapter : KIN Chp 9
Document Summary
Describe the genetic, environmental, and physiological factors that contribute to obesity in the united states. One gene in particular the fto gene, may be among the most important. People with certain genetic variations may tend to graze for food more often, eat more meals, and consume more calories every day. Studies have found that the effects of the fto gene on obesity are over 30 percent less among physically active adults. Different genes may influence weight gain at certain periods of life, particularly during adolescence and young adulthood. Aspects of our everyday lives such as automobiles, remote controls, desk jobs, and computer use all lead us to sit more and move less; our culture also urges us to eat more. The public are forced to see advertisements for high-calorie foods at low prices and marketing of super-sized portions. We have access to prepackaged, high-fat meals at very low and affordable prices.
