Rome trailed greece by around 700 years. Eventually ruled most of europe and north africa. Patricians- wealthy class, ran government, most powerful. Plebians- worked for patricians, farmers, laborers, craftsmen. Slaves- worked but not paid, owned by a wealthy person. King was selected by senate; eventually lost power and switched to emperors. Led a large group of soldiers and won war appointed emperor. -- today we use football as a business & entertainment. Built massive arenas primarily for spectators (circus maximus & colosseum) Not to be confused with hippodrome in greece. For entertainment (redefined sport as spectator"s entertainment) Focused on brutality of sport while greeks focused on beauty of sport, Had the equivalent of skyboxes with reserved seating for the emperor, senators, financial backers of the race, those who presided over the competition, and the jury that awarded the prizes much like a suite today. The term gladiator originated from gladuis a weapon used to fight.
