This article shows how the australian government has recently reformed some of their laws on gene patenting in a dramatic way. While still allowing genes to be patented, parliament has now made it so bio tech companies can no longer restrict research on any genes patented. The author also states that parliament is stopping the blocking of treatments and diagnostics to doctors and patients which mean no high prices for diagnostic tests that use a patented gene or gene sequence. The government is also changing the criteria for a new gene to be patented making it harder to patent genes. The author shows how these law reforms have helped and will potentially help the. I would like to research ways that this reform could possibly help the u. s. because i think that our government could use some reform when it comes to the subject of gene patents and research.
