Values- things that reflect our presumptions about social life and human nature: aesthetic(is s/t pleasing), professional(innovation), logical(consistency), moral(honesty) and socio-cultural values (hard-work) Ideals- a notion of excellence, a goal that is thought to bring greater harmony to ourselves and others: american culture respecting ideals like tolerance, peace, justice etc. Principles- those guidelines we derive from values and ideals that are precursors to codified rules: always maximize profit - principle derived from belief in efficiency of the free enterprise system. Ethical standards for mass media often involve these 3 levels: personal level, professional level, societal level. Media literacy: the more you know about media regulation, the more your critical awareness increases. Mass media research- the use of systematic methods to understand or solve problems regarding the mass media. Chicago school: robert park, john dewey, charles cooley, think the roll of mass media is for the community.
