Document Summary

A lot of things in biological systems are sensitive to ph, in result of that biological systems a system of buffers. The system of buffers keeps the concentration of hydrogen ions constant to maintain a constant ph. Small groups of atoms attach to the carbon backbone of organic molecules. Learning the properties of these structures help to understand the properties of organic molecules. Cause changes in physical characteristics and chemical properties. The bond between the -oh and carbon is a polar covalent bond making it a polar functional group i. e. sugars; they are polar molecules therefore they will go into water (polar) solution. Again there is a polar covalent bond making it a polar functional group. Ketone if located in a carbon chain i. e. ribulose sugar. Aldehyde if located on the end of a chain i. e. glucose sugar. Ho-c=o (carbon with a double bond oxygen and a hydroxide) They dissociate to make a hydrogen ion, making it acidic.
