Document Summary

Learning objectives: define the fundamental characteristics of organizational structures. Mechanistic organizations seek to maximize internal efficiency, whereas organic organizations emphasize flexibility. Differentiation is created through specialization an division of labor: specialization is where various individuals and units throughout the organization perform different tasks. The assignments of tasks to different people or groups often is referred to as the division of labor. Specialization of tasks within an organization cannot be performed independently of one another: coordination links the various tasks to achieve the organization"s overall mission. Organization with many different specialization tasks and work units is highly differentiated. The more differentiated, the more integration and coordination required: distinguish between the 4 dimensions of an organization"s vertical structure. Organization"s vertical structure consists of authority, span of control, delegation, and centralization: authority is the legitimate right to make decisions and tell others what to do.
