Document Summary

Myth or science: happy workers are productive workers, no relationship between job satisfaction and performance. It is hard to tell which causes which: attitudes do influence behavior, give us a warning of potential problems. Which comes first, the attitude or the behavior: generally speaking in workplace attitude comes first, then behavior, but not always. Cognitive dissonance: the internal tension or stress we experience when we have an inconsistency of two attitudes. Individuals seek to reduce cognitive dissonance: three things we can do to change or get rid of cognitive dissonance, change attitude, change behavior, rationalize the inconsistency. Chapter 3 notes: attitude relevance, timing of measurement, personality, certain personality traits are more likely to follow up on attitudes, others are likely to hold back, personal experiences affect attitudes, social pressures. Predicting behavior from attitudes: the closer the match between attitude and behavior, the stronger the relationship, specific attitudes predict specific behaviors, general attitudes predict general behavior.
