Elements of music: melody, rhythym, harmony, timbre, texture, form. We usually follow along with the phrasese when we listen to music. Tends to be passed down from generation to generation. The voice is important as well as the voice. Raga- note patterns of a melody, no fixed scale, ascending and descending pattern of notes. Relies exclusively on the melody for musical expression. Tempo- how fast or how slow the piece is, allegro; fast and lento; slow. Syncopation- when the accent is on the weak beat or between beats, creates a feeling of being "off beat"; often heard in jazz, latin music, and hip-hop. Gamelan- bali, indonesia, ensemble percussive instruments (gongs, chimes, drums, cymbals); characteristics-core melody, ostinato, interlocking style. Harmony- is built on chords, a group of two or more pitches that sound at the same time. Chord progression - a succession of chords moving forward in a purposeful fashion. Cadence- the end of a chord progression, sense of closure.
