Document Summary
Early jazz - ragtime, odjb, louis armstrong, bix beiderbecke, bessie smith, sidney. Pre-dated by the bands of fletcher henderson and early. Consolidation of the rhythm section to piano, bass, drums, and perhaps guitar, tuba and banjo died out. Consolidation of the drum set to that as we know it today bass drum, snare, hi-hat, tom- tom and cymbals. 5 saxophones, 3-4 trumpets, 3-4 trombones, piano, bass, guitar, and drums. Swing was played on all four beats instead of 1 & 3. Stride disappeared, due to addition of the guitar and the strong bass pulse on all four beats. First great rhythm section came out of this band. Uses brass vs. reeds call and response. Stranded in kansas city, 1927, played in silent movie theatres. Took over and reorganized bennie moten"s band in 1935. Rarely played solos, thought of more as a rhythm player. Played with strong pulse, that enable basie to stop playing stride.
