Chapter 7 homework: the atmospheric pressure that is associated with the centers of the subtropical gyres are equatorial currents, western boundary currents, northern and southern. Equatorial currents travel west along the equator forming the equatorial boundary current of subtropical gyres. The coriolis effect redirects these currents away from the equator as western boundary currents. The northern and southern boundary currents are between 30 and 60 degrees latitude. Eastern boundary currents flow back across the ocean basin and the coriolis effect and continental barriers turn them to the equator. The subpolar gyres pressure is associated with the ekman spiral, ekman transport, geostrophic currents, and intensification of subtropical gyres. Nanson s observations between the balance of frictional effects in the oceans and the coriolis effect are called the ekman spiral. This also explains the direction and speed of the flow of surface waters at various depths.
