The big idea: today we"re going to consider one explanation for when people participate in politics, and consider whether that explanation helps us understand why young people vote less, rational choice theory, the paradigm for neoclassical (mainstream) economics. Socioeconomic barriers to voting: so, what kinds of things change the costs and benefits of voting from person to person, political. Participation other than voting: the resource model allows us ot look at the effects of these things that differ from person to person on other outcomes, too, time-based acts such as attending a meeting, political contributions, political discussion. Skills: both time and money contribute to skills, particularly when it comes to skills, we move beyond voting to other kinds of political participation, campaigning, letter writing, etc. The patterns differ for voting and for making contributions.
