Objectives: define consciousness, and identify two types, describe the basic neurobiology of consciousness, describe what happens when we don"t sleep, distinguish the two theories of why we sleep, identify the stages of sleep, describe the various sleep related disorders/problems. Consciousness: awareness of everything around you and inside of your own head at any given moment, used to organize your behavior, thoughts, sensations, and feelings, generated from a set of action potentials. Types of consciousness: 2 different kinds, 1. Waking consciousness: thoughts, feelings, sensations clear and organized: 2. Alerted states of consciousness: shifts in the quality or pattern of mental activity: daydreaming, hypnotic state, meditative state, increased alertness, divided attention, sleep. Extended sleep deprivation: missing multiple days of sleep (no sleep or reduced levels, significant impairment in functioning, long term sleep deprivation and health, obesity, impaired immune system functioning + increased inflammatory response, fatal familial insomnia.
