Document Summary

Detecting physical stimuli in our environment and converting it into neural signals or electrical info; occurs when special receptors in the sense organs are activated, allowing forms of outside stimuli to become neural signals for brain to interpret. Weber"s law- difference thresholds increase in proportion to the size of the stimulus. 2 stimuli must differ by a constant minimum percentage (rather than a constant amount) to be perceived as different. Signal detection theory- predicts how and when we detect the presence of a faint stimulus. Those stimuli just strong enough for our sensory receptors to barely pick them up. Subliminal perception- stimuli acting on our unconscious mind to influence our behavior. Priming- occurs when an earlier stimulus influences the response to a later stimulus. Inattentional blindness- complete failure to consciously perceive an otherwise salient object or event when attention and expectation are otherwise engaged. Brightness (amplitude- height of the wave), color (wavelength- length of wave), saturation (purity- mixture of wavelengths)
