Document Summary
Personality- encompasses the unique and relatively stable way a person thinks, acts, and feels throughout his or her life. 3 perspectives: psychodynamic, behavioral social cognitive, humanistic. Psychodynamic- focuses on the role of the unconscious in the development of personality. Psychological defense mechanisms- unconscious distortions of a person"s perception of reality that reduce stress and anxiety. Sublimation- turning socially unacceptable behavior into something acceptable. Denial- refusing to acknowledge the threatening situation. Rationalization- person invents acceptable excuses for unacceptable feelings or behavior. Neo-freudians- still focus on early development; more social, less sexual; jung, alder, horney, Research supports defense mechanisms and the concept of the unconscious mind that can influence conscious behavior (priming) Social cognitive- learning more (modeling) and cognitive processes (expectations, beliefs) Behavior governed by not only environmental factors but also by cognitive processes. Bandura believes personality is the result of an interaction that takes place between a person and his social context.
