Network of cells that carries information to and from all parts of the body. Neuroscience: branch of the life sciences that deals with the structure and function of the brain and the neurons, nerves, and nervous tissue that form the nervous system. A neuron that is at rest is electrically charged. Inside of cell is mostly negative while outside of cell is mostly positive. Specialized cell in the nervous system that receives and sends messages within that system: one of the messengers of the body, very special structure. Dendrites: parts of the neuron that receive messages from other cells: looks like branches of a tree. Soma (cell body): part of the cell that contains the nucleus and keeps the entire cell alive and functioning: dendrites are attached here. 90% of the cells in our nervous system are glial cells. Supportive role: provide nutrients, repair damage, form myelin, and get ride of waste.
