Document Summary
Retrieves the information: there are multiple types of memory- it is not one thing in one place in the brain. How does memory work: several models exist, one prominent model is the information-processing model of memory. 3 memory stores: sensory memory, short-term memory (working memory, long-term memory. Sensory memory: holds information from the senses for a very brief duration, each sense has a sensory memory associated with it, visual= iconitc memory (about one second, auditory= echoic memory (about 4 seconds) Short-term memory: the magic number is 7 plus or minus 2, activated memory that holds a few items briefly, lasts up to about 30 seconds. Efforts to remember: stm- chunking: increases the amount you can remember. Organizing items into familiar, manageable units (an area code before a phone number). Working memory: more modern view of stm, one view is that it is made up of 3 storage systems. Episodic buffer: plus an executive control system called the central executive.
