PSYC 2000 Chapter : Brain Lesion
Document Summary
Irreversible: lesion = tissue destruction, damage to a brain structure (or to multiple structures) may affect a person"s behavior or abilities, damage may be deliberate (experiment) or accidental (stroke). Brain simulation: electrical stimulation of the brain (esb): milder electrical current that causes neurons to react as if they had received a message, no permanent damage to neurons. Mapping structure: computed tomography (ct): brain-imaging method using computer-controlled x-rays of the brain, magnetic resonance imaging (mri): brain-imaging method using radio waves and magnetic fields of the body to produce detailed images of the brain. Structures of the brain: the brain stem, the oldest part of the brain, beginning where the spinal cord swells and enters the skull, responsible for automatic survival functions. The limbic system: amygdala: linked to emotion of fear and anger, hippocampus: plays a vital role in learning and memory, hypothalamus: directs several maintenance activities like eating, drinking, body temperature, and sexual behavior, contains the reward center.
