Document Summary
States of consciousness: daydreaming, drowsiness, dreaming, hallucinations, orgasm, food or oxygen starvation, sensory deprivation hypnosis, meditation. Only 10% of the information we process we are actually aware of, other 90% is processed by our subconscious. Selective attention: focusing on an object or task can cause selective attention (not seeing everything that is in front of you) If we could be aware of everything going on around us (not being selectively attentive) we would hear, feel, and see every detail around us. Cocktail party effect: hearing your name in someone else"s conversation causes you to become interested to their conversation (anything personally relevant will cause this to happen) Selective inattention: when a person does not notice things right in front of themselves (caused by selective attention) Inattentional blindness: refers to the inability to see an object in our line of sight (caused by being selectively attentive to something)
