Document Summary

Chapter 8 social and personality development in the preschool years. Psychosocial development in preschool years: resolving the conflict. Preschoolers begin to see themselves as distinct individual persons. Begin to make decisions on their own assert themselves. Ex they decide what want to wear/what to eat. Independence of action (doing things indep of parents) Guilt (from failure/not succeeding or from parents shaming) Parents can foster independent by providing opportunities to act self-reliantly. Ex give direction/guidance on how to achieve a task. That guilt can persist through life & affect self-concept. By age 2 - children are consistent in labeling selves & others as male (boy)/female (girl) Society treats boys/girls differently & this factors into gender identity. Ex boys encouraged/praised for intellectual & analytical skills. Girls prefer to play w/other girls (usually occurs by age 2) This sex segregation occurs later 4 boys than girls usually not until age 3. Ex hispanic boys prefer 2 play w/white boys rather than hispanic girls.
