PSYC 4033 Chapter : 9 4 HUMAN MEMORY PROCESSES Fall 12
Document Summary
Sensory memory- raw date, large capacity, info lost very quickly. Short-term memory- encoded data, limited capacity, info lost in about 20 seconds, things stored here are influenced by long term memory. Long-term memory- contains a variety of complex info, large capacity, permanent?, still not quite sure of the full capacity, interacts with sensory memory and short term. Each memory system interacts to serve everything that you do. It is easiest to test visual and hearing and a little bit of touch. Briefly holds info in literal form, giving perceptual processes time to work. Fill in the blanks when stimulation is intermittent. Words are not uttered as whole objects; phonemes unfold over time all do it. Visual processes like flip book, marquee lights, film projectors. Segner (1740) is credited with initiating the iconic memory. Attached coals to a wagon wheel and spun it so to the naked eye it looked like a full circle.
