Toward end of labor contractions come every 2 minutes and last almost 2 minutes. Allows baby"s head to pass through the cervix to the birth canal. Labor typically begins approximately 266 days following conception. Labor begins when hormones (like oxytocin) are released. Longest stage - contractions are 8-10 minutes apart and last about 30 seconds each. Baby"s head emerges further from mother with each contraction. Crowning - top of baby"s head emerges from mother. Stage 2 ends with complete passage of the baby. Occurs when placenta and umbilical cord expelled from mother. Labor usually takes 16-24 hours (there are variations) longer for 1st time mothers. Spontaneous act - allows them to clear fluid from lungs and then they can start to breath on their own. Standard measurement - looks for indicators of good health in neonate (newborn) 5 indicators: skin color, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration. Scores range from 0 -2 on each indicator.
