REL 1005 Chapter : Chapter 6
Document Summary
In this chapter it is discussed the difference in greek and roman views of religion. They worshiped in the style of polytheism- the worship and belief in many gods. The greeks would put their food on the family hearth before meals to offer it to hestia, the hearth god. Different gods had different ways of being worshipped. Some had specific locations, while others had statues or symbols. Both greece and rome states accepted polytheism and believed that if the rituals were not honored, calamity would fall upon the city. The people who believed in one god were accused of atheism by the others who believed in many god and were to blame for anything bad that happened to their empire. There were many cults in the greek and roman religions. Many rituals shown in these cults now show in the christian religion today. Washing in water is like baptism and sharing sacred meals together.
