Document Summary

), build the infrastructure needed to support a modern economy, and develop the extensive agricultural system needed to feed 7+ billion people. However, these advances have not occurred without significant environmental changes, many of which have been subtle, long-term, and invisible to the casual observer. The state of the planet (reading 1) outlined four trends that are affecting earth"s life-support systems. The threats posed by these trends (as well as others) have spurred the evolution of environmental science, or the study of how the world works. Conservation biology has emerged along with environmental science and is particularly focused on the status and protection of the planet"s biodiversity, their genetic composition, and the habitats and ecosystems that support them. As i use it in this class, natural resource conservation deals with understanding the relationships between human activities and renewable resources, and developing strategies for sustainable use of these resources (figure 1).
