What"s culture: material (art, machines, clothing, nonmaterial or symbolic (language-written, oral, gestures), values (norms - folkways, Mores, taboos, sanctions: taken for granted; usually follow without question, sociological perspective - understand culture"s influence on our lives, ex: fresh drinking water, regular access to food, certain freedoms, religion. Culture shock: taken for granted life assumptions become unreliable, ethnocentrism-use our culture to judge others, our culture-good, right, superior. Negatives: people still hold onto something just because it"s a part of their culture, negative attitudes towards other groups, attempt to understand a culture on its own terms, counters ethnocentrism, nobody completely succeeds at it. Social location effects norms and sanctions: yes; race, religion, and perceived authenticity matter.
