Inequality: unequal distribution of scarce goods or resources among individuals or groups; bw two people. Social differentiation: how people according to social characteristics. Class, status, & power (weber): cant have one without the other. Class consciousness: awareness that diff classes exist; ppls fates depend on fate of class; most americans want gov to do little for equality. Economic explanations: competition and conflict among groups are inevitable when diff groups desire commodities in short supply; form prejudices when economically threatened; less educated more prejudice; used to stigmatize a group as inferior. Status attainment model: how we attain our socioeconomic status; way we assess the importance of individual factors for success in later life; economic(income we gain); social(ppl who are well connected); cultural(given by parent); human(resources you attain yourself)
