SOCL 2001 Chapter : 20-Feb
Document Summary
Status set- a collection of social statuses that a person occupies. An ascribed status is an inborn status, almost impossible to change (gender, race, age, sex) An achieved status is a position that we earn (athlete, drug dealer) Fatness and obesity are body characteristics, which are both ascribed and achieved for adults. Master status- overrides all others in our identities (could be occupation, race, a guy in a wheel chair: his disabilities will be his master status) Status inconsistency- occupying social positions that create conflict because of their rankings. Question: e: role conflict- two or more roles that conflict, role strain- demands among roles within a single status, self-fulfilling prophecy. If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences : social exchange theory- maximizing rewards; minimizing costs.
