In other words, families are groups in which people come together to form a strong primary group connection, maintaining emotional ties to one another over a long period of time. Empty nest ; adult children have left home: variations in family life, nuclear family is a two-parent family structure. In some family structures a parent is not present at all. They also note that family members take on a status roles in a marriage or family. Many americans are resistant to government intervention in the family: parents do not want the government to tell them how to raise their children or to become involved in domestic issues: symbolic interactionism. Interactionists view the world in terms of symbols and the meanings assigned to them. To some, it is a father, mother, and children; to others, it is any union that involves respect and compassion. Interactionist stress that family is not an objective, concrete reality.
