Reference groups: people that shape our behavior , values. Social networks: a web of social ties that links an individual to others, networks may be tightly knit and have clear boundaries or large and impersonal with fluid boundaries. Formal organization: complex and structured secondary groups deliberately created to achieve specific goals. Characteristics of formal organization: statuses and roles are organized around shared expectation and goals, norms specify rights, duties, and sanctions, a formal hierarchy indicate who is in charge.
