Groups within society: people who think of themselves as belonging together and interact with one another, intimate relationships and sense of belonging, the following are not groups, aggregate- temporarily share physical space, category- share similar characteristics. Intimate; long term; face to face interactions: sense of identity and belonging, essential to emotional well being. Secondary groups: larger; more anonymous; more formal; more impersonal, shared interests and activities, necessary in today"s society, lack of intimate connection, break into primary groups. Based around mutual interest (politics, health, education, ect. ) Inner circle & iron law of oligarchy: members: key members (inner circle) of organizations often grow distant from regular, appoint other inner circle members to lead the group, oligarchy- organization dominated by small, self perpetuating elite. Ex: us federal government- the members of the supreme court all went to. In groups & out groups: out groups- antagonism. In groups- loyalty; more likely to excuse faults and encourage others to do better.
