SOCL 2001 Chapter : IMAG0180
Document Summary
The first reading i read was restoration of the mississippi delta: lessons from hurricane. Katrina and rita and this reading has many authors. The reading starts off by giving us a background on the mississippi deltaic plain (mdp), and when and how it was made. The mdp is a 25,000-km squared landscape of water, wetlands, and low upland ridges, formed as a series of overlapping delta lobes. It was formed about 6000 to 7000 years ago. Riverine sediments were deposited at the mouths of rivers and over banks and formed crevasses. Barrier islands were formed which protect from sea water getting into fresh water and from storm surges. All the rivers and distributaries wash sand and sediment out into the delta to help form barrier islands. Since 1900, about 4,900 km squared of wetlands in coastal louisiana have been lost at a rate of about 100 km squared a year.
