masters, work, and culture. You have now read Solomon Northup’s Twelve Years a
Slave. Your assignment is to analyze Solomon Northup’s experiences through those same
analytical lenses. Your essay should be organized in the following manner and must
respond to the following prompts or questions:
1. Begin your essay by providing basic biographical information about Northup and
explain how he came to be a slave.
2. Describe Northup’s experiences in slave markets.
3. Describe two of Northup’s masters. What does their behavior suggest about how
masters sought to manage their slaves in antebellum Louisiana?
4. According to the lecture material on slavery, there were several factors that could
shape the kind of work a slave performed. Select two of the factors introduced in the
lecture and explain how they shaped the kinds of work Northup performed.
5. Using Northup, identify at least one key difference in the work routines for slaves on
cotton versus sugar plantations.
6. As you close your essay, reflect on at least one aspect of slave culture, how Solomon
described it, and what it meant to him during his twelve-year ordeal.
