Contemporary family activities: reproduction, consumption = labor market mode of production, characteristics, work for wages, buying goods & services, separated home from workplace. The emergence of the modern american family: 1776 to 1900: 4 new characteristics of the family, marriage increasingly based on affection and mutual respect, women cared for children and maintained the home. Women"s sphere : children became the center of attention, discipline, economic support, etc, number of children per family declined. Individualism: self-satisfaction, personal autonomy, marriage retained moral basis, moral order.
