Family structure: historical changes, economic changes, power changes, social changes. A look at societies: history recognizes 5 major types of societies in different parts of the world and time periods, while 5 are distinguished and discussed here, variations of each type have also existed. Hunting & gathering: small wandering groups of a few hundred people or less, prevailed during the stone age, survives today in remote areas. The family tends to be a simple unit: women gathered and men hunted. Advanced horticulture and plow culture: metal tools, complex stratification system, complex family systems, classes emerge based on land ownership.
