SOCL 3371 Chapter : Chapter 4- 6 Notes 3371
Document Summary
Relatively new, the idea of professional uniformed police officer is taken for granted. Police have evolved from appointed friends with no training to what we have today. Early british policing directly influenced the development of policing in the american colonies. Early records show that england had no formal police, that responsibilities fell to a social unit referred to as the borh. 12 members stood surety for each other"s good behavior. If a member of the borh committed a crime, the other members were committed to bring him to justice. System lasted until 1066 following the norman conquest. Included all men over the age of 12 in groups of approximately ten households(tithing) All members were expected to produce any man of that tithing suspected of committing a crime or bear responsibility for his alleged misdeeds. Hundredman is considered by some as the first real police officer.
