The police organization: state and local law enforcement: provide services to large cities, towns, counties, and all areas in between, federal law enforcement, homeland security: u. s. customs and border patrol, u. s. Immigration and customs enforcement, and u. s. secret service: department of justice: federal bureau of investigation, drug. Enforcement administration, bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives. Marshals service: number and types of state and local law enforcement agencies vary by jurisdiction: may include sheriffs" offices, state highway patrols and city police departments, paramilitary framework, chain of command. Almost all require high school diploma and some include 2-4 year college degree. Testing included written examination focusing on reasoning, basic math, and language. Psychological evaluations, physical fitness testing, oral exam, polygraph, character investigations, and medical and drug screenings. Selected applicants then attend a police academy and then enter into field training program.
