For an event to be theatre it has to meet four conditions: live- audience and actors breathing same air, ephemeral- doesn"t last long. Cannot be recorded bc then it isn"t live: collaborative- between audience and audience. Exchange of energy, you can tell when your audience is not engaged: a synthesis of many arts- acting, writing, visual, philosophy, music. Other qualities: the literary genre of works, the quality of being arresting or highly emotional, tells a story, stories contain a state, situation, or series of events, human conflict, transformative art form. Just need two players, a board, and a passion. Codes: embedded assumptions, a system of nonverbal signs (or conventions) that carry meaning, codes make it easier to communicate.
