Evaluation - the creative experience is a process of selecting and evaluating. In some cultures, adherence to past standards matter most. In others, communicating the spirit of the work took precedence over raw skill. Some artists in their times were famous, but unknown today & vise versa. The traditional skill of an artist may be relevant to judgement of quality, but will rarely give the final answer. It is most rewarding to view art with an open mind, go beyond snap judgements. Art criticism - refers to making discriminating judgements, favorable and unfavorable. Formal theories - focuses attention on the composition + originality. Thinks abt how it may be influenced by other works, or influences other artists. Look carefully at how a work is made. These critics believe that the most important influence on a work is other works that the artist has seen or studied. The subject/theme of the work is less important than how it is presented.
