Architecture - modern architecture rejected tradition, ornament, and references to the past. They embraced modern materials and a utilitarian look. Later, people became discontent w/ the international style and looked back at meaning, history, and context. Thought that the functional purity of the international style made all buildings look the same, offering no identity relative 2 purpose, no symbolism, no sense of local meaning, no excitement. Celebrated complexity, ambiguity, nostalgia, and popular taste. One of the first architects to rebel against the i. s. was robert venturi and his partner. Wrote learning from las vegas, which urged architects to study what is local, vernacular, and even tacky. The post-modern style of michael graves uses classical architecture in knowing and sometimes humorous ways. His public service building is both formal and playful. He uses classical designs, but modern bright colors. The fa ade consists of featureless rows of square openings, an ironic reference to the bureaucrats inside.
