Ensuring that earth"s soil and water resources can provide enough food for the world"s population has always been a concern in environmental science. Food production has increased so dramatically that we now use corn, soy, and sugar to run our cars. Food security - the ability to obtain sufficient, healthy food on a daily basis. The world"s population has more than doubled, but food production has risen even faster, but hunger is still within us. About 95% of hungry people are in developing countries. Even in wealthy countries such as the u. s. , millions lack a sufficient, healthy diet. Food security is important at multiple scales. In the poorest countries, entire national economies can suffer from a severe drought, flood, or insect outbreak. Individual villages also suffer from a lack of food security. Even within families, there can be unequal food security: males often get the largest share and women and children get the poorest diet.
