EDT 190 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Fluid And Crystallized Intelligence
Document Summary
Environment: surrounding conditions or influences in which a person operates. Most people when they picture a classroom they think of a generic teaching space. We think of forward facing desks, in rows facing the teacher. Basic design assumptions used to create school buildings. School was just a way to try and end child labor. We developed a factory model of schooling, students progress lockstep along a predetermined path. Factories aren"t about individualization, like you need in the education, instead they are about standardization. As well as, efficiency, conformity and control. The default arrangement of the classroom doesn"t make sense when teachers want to foster collaboration and the development of fluid intelligence. You want to look at colors, choice, connection, flexibility, complexity and light. The constructed environment sets up and facilitates certain ways of acting and interacting. Sometimes teachers just ignore the physical space, like it doesn"t matter. If you want to shift culture, you must shift habit and habitats.
