Document Summary

People from the balkan region and greek peninsula began to meet and mingle during the 3rd millennium. Sophisticated society arose on the island of crete. The inhabitants build lavish palaces, the most complex being at knossos. These palaces served as residences of rulers and storehouses where officials collected taxes. 2200-1450 b. c. e. , crete was the main center for commerce in the mediterranean. Crete received early influences from egypt and phoenicia. Built advanced sailing ships so they could go abroad and trade their wine, olive oil and wool in exchange for grains, textiles and manufacture goods. After 1700 b. c. e. they experience many earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tidal waves that devastated their society. After all of this, they replaced what was destroyed with more lavish places with indoor plumbing and sewage systems. This however attracted many invaders and the society eventually fell under foreign domination. Chaos reigned throughout the mediterranean; trojan war, civil disturbances. Hard to maintain a stable government or agriculture.
