Document Summary

Imperial expansion brought power and wealth to rome, this also brought problems to rome. Roman civil and military leaders gradually dismantled the republican constitution and imposed a centralized imperial form of government on the city of rome and its empire. Violent social conflict and civil wars erupted. The gracchi brothers worked to limit the amount of conquered land that any individual could hold. Their enemies assassinated one of the brothers, because they feared he would gain too much power. Constitution was designed for small city-states, not from an expanding population and agricultural republic. Some military commanders began to recruit personal armies. These urban workers/soldiers were intensely loyal to their generals. Sulla was marius successor, sulla seized rome and initiated slaughter of his enemies. His reign of terror lasted about 5 years. He escaped danger during the reign of sulla. Played an active role in roman politics. During the next decade, caesar led a roman army into gaul.
