Mus 185 reading outline music the concept in a variety of cultures . There will be different and sometimes contradictory ideas in music due to the different cultures that produce it. Different terminologies refer to different types and aspects of music, in multiple different languages. Boundaries of music in western culture are very set and definite: either is music or is not music, no in between. Music is mostly seen as positive in western culture. Japanese music sometimes follows the genres and categories set by western music, but also bases music off of its place of origin: the categories are kept very distinct from each other. The musical culture in iran is very expressive of the middle east and islamic culture. Follows the west, separation of instrumental music and vocal. Music that strays from a metric and composed sound is frowned upon is islamic culture. Each genre should be considered separate from the others, not as a whole.
