External anatomy: palpebral fissure: the space between the eyelids when open, limbus: the outer ring separating the sclera and the iris, external muscles. Internal anatomy: outer layer: sclera, middle layer: choroid. Visual pathways and visual fields: refraction of light rays, crossing of fibers at optic nerve. Tests: snellen eye chart-test each eye individually with and without corrective lenses. Near vision use the pocket version 14 inches away from eyes. Tests central visual acuity: amsler grid-central. Cover one eye, then focus on the dot in the center. Do any of the lines look wavy blurred or distorted. Are there any missing area or dark areas. Patient and examiner cover opposite eyes (on same side while facing each other) Bring object into field of vision as patient looks at you. Patient is expected to see object at same time as you assuming the examiner is normal: extraocular muscles (diagnostic positions test) Test for eye movement using 6 cardinal fields of gaze.
