Relative deprivation- the lack of resources to sustain the diet, lifestyle + amenities than an individual/group are accustomed to: ex. After settling in the united states, immigrants often enjoy material comforts and more political freedom than the possible in their homelands. If they were to compare themselves w the most other people in the us but they will feel deprived because bc although their standards have improved, the immigrants still perceive relative deprivation. Absolute deprivation- a minimal level of need rendering a person able to survive + participate actively in society: discrimination doesn"t necessarily mean absolute deprivation. When offenders are motivated to choose a victim bc of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion: hate crime statistics act- created a national order to identify these crimes, today"s hate crimes = similar to kkk.
