PSY 244 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Amniotic Sac
Document Summary
Aristotle: does prenatal life start with the new individual already preformed, composed of a full set of tiny parts, or do the many parts of the human body develop in succession. Epigenesis: emergence of new structures and functions during development. Gametes- germ cells, sperm and egg- each contains only half the genetic material found in other cells: produced through meiosis, eggs and sperm receive only one member from each of the 23 chromosome pairs. Cell division- mitosis- the zygote divides into two parts, both containing a full complement of genetic material, then the process repeats. Cell migration- cells move away to form different parts. Cell differentiation- embryonic stem cells can be used for any body part, but after several cell divisions, they start to specialize in structure and function. Germinal- conception-2weeks - begins with conception and lasts until the zygote becomes implanted in the uterine wall. Embryonic- 3-8weeks - major development in all the organs and systems of the body.
