1. According to the chapter, how does road and storm water infrastructure impact homeowners
and cities?
a. Road and storm water infrastructure often destroys the ecological function of the land
that supports it and burdens homebuyers and taxpayers through its cost to install,
maintain, and replace. Since the end of WWII, the per dwelling unit costs for providing,
maintaining, and replacing infrastructure has increased by nearly 400%.
2. According to the chapter, how does road and storm water infrastructure interfere with the
ecological function of the land?
a. Pavement fundamentally alters where water goes when it rains. Water that should go
into the ground goes into pipelines or rivers instead, which can contaminate our
freshwater and drinking water
3. Outline four (4) benefits of a canopy cover of riparian vegetation along stream corridors. What is
the minimum feet of streamside vegetation required to maintain a healthy riparian corridor of a
watercourse?
a. At least 100 feet is required to maintain a healthy riparian corridor
b. Roots and fallen trees reduce the energy of flowing water, which in turn, helps to secure
streamflow and stabilize them
c. Riparian plants hold soil in place and trap moving sediment, replacing soil and reducing
erosion

robust planting strategy for streets, yards, and, at certain densities, rooftops, then the
predevelopment hydrograph can be nearly matched.
