Medication: use of stimulants and medication to treat kids with adhd= heated debate, stimulant medications: Have been used to treat symptoms of adhd since their chance discovery in the 1930s. Most studied, most effective, and most commonly used treatment for managing adhd symptoms. However, important to keep in mind that there are other forms of medication that kids can use other than stimulant medications. Short vs. long acting forms: dextroamphetamine dexedrine or dextrostat, amphetamine-dextroamphetamine adderall, methylphenidate ritalin most commonly used drug by far. These medications alter activity in the frontostriatal region of the brain by affecting neurotransmitters (dopamine) important to this region.
