Chapter 11: Language
Syntax First Approach to Parsing:
o states that as people read a sentence, their grouping of words into phrases is
governed by a number of rules that are based on syntax
one of earliest proposals to try and explain parsing
o If, along the way, readers start to recognize that there is something wrong with
their parsing, then they take other information into account in order to
reinterpret the sentence
o Proposes a number of principles that a parser uses to group words:
1. Late Closure:
whe a perso eouters a ew word, the perso’s parsig
mechanism assumes that this word is part of the current phrase,
so each new word is added to the current phrase for as long as
possible
Useful because it often leads to the correct parsing through
having us make initial errors in terms of parsing sentences
Interactionist Approach to Parsing:
o the idea that both syntax and semantics are taken into account simultaneously
as we read and listen to a sentence
o Meaning of words in a sentence can influence parsing right from the beginning
shows the role of semantics
