PSY30400 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Parsing, Binoculars
Chapter 11: Language
• Syntax First Approach to Parsing:
o states that as people read a sentence, their grouping of words into phrases is
governed by a number of rules that are based on syntax
▪ one of earliest proposals to try and explain parsing
o If, along the way, readers start to recognize that there is something wrong with
their parsing, then they take other information into account in order to
reinterpret the sentence
o Proposes a number of principles that a parser uses to group words:
▪ 1. Late Closure:
• whe a perso eouters a ew word, the perso’s parsig
mechanism assumes that this word is part of the current phrase,
so each new word is added to the current phrase for as long as
possible
• Useful because it often leads to the correct parsing through
having us make initial errors in terms of parsing sentences
• Interactionist Approach to Parsing:
o the idea that both syntax and semantics are taken into account simultaneously
as we read and listen to a sentence
o Meaning of words in a sentence can influence parsing right from the beginning
▪ shows the role of semantics
